On Hardball tonight the Republican candidate pointed out that Lieberman running as an independent will split the democratic vote and improve his chances of taking the Senate seat for the Repubes. Sort of like Nader giving the election to Bush by splitting the democratic vote. Maybe that's Lieberman's idea as a left handed way to support Bush's Israel policy?

The Nader-like split of the Democratic vote by Lieberman is one possibility.

It's also possible that JL will take a good chunk of votes away from the Republican.

It's also possible that Democrats will get stronger in their disdain for JL's rather pathetic hanging on. If the Lamont team plays this right, they could bury him enough in the polls that JL's funding would dry up.

It's my hope that Joe will have a few days of crying in his beer, and then come to his senses and/or bow to pressure to drop out. A few of the big blogs that I've looked at are already calling on Harry Reid to strip Joe of all of his Senate committee memberships and other perqs, since Joe has effectively quit the Democratic party. I expect this pressure to increase in the next few days.

Of course, the guy who once said he wanted to be a uniter and not a divider could fix this mess by firing Rummy and giving Joe the job of SecDef.

Like that's gonna happen.
