Cross words

From today's puzzle in the NY Times: 1-Across, six letters, clue: "Most distant"

Which got me to thinking: If it's "nearest," why isn't it "farest?"

I guess I'm missing something for the trees.

(Actual answer in the Comments.)

I'm sure you heard the world record for most points in a single scrabble play (and for the entire game as well) was broken just a couple of weeks ago... by a carpenter in Massachusetts.

The word was 'Quixotry,' built through an 'r' and passing through 2 triple word scores.

I'm sure it's even in one of your blogs. Or would you even consider non-political blog entries?

Actually, I hadn't heard this. Thanks for sharing.

Carpenter in MA. No surprises there. That state is lousy with smart people who would rather pound nails than keyboards or podiums.

As for whether I would have considered posting such an item, had I heard of it first, the answer is yes. I'm not all about the politics, especially now that we've had an Election Day that indicates some small return to sanity.

It's curious, though. There seems to be little correlation between crossword puzzle and Scrabble ability, or so I've heard. For example, I am quite good at the former, but not even middling at the latter. I'm also pretty bad at Jumble.
