The king is dead.

Really nice obit in the NYT for Bobby Fischer, once a boyhood hero, and too long an embarrassment.

I was shocked to read his obit today. I always thought of him as my age, though he was about a decade older. I'm with you. He was a hero of my youth who really couldn't stay locked in to reality. Sad.

Given our age difference, I can appreciate your point of view. But for those of us old enough, there was truly something magical about the match against Boris Spassky. Long before the Internet, this was the first time that geek was chic.
