Heh, I don't know that I'd even pay that much for that idea. I do believe McCain wanted to pick Lieberman, but I think he wanted to be president, first and foremost, and knew he just couldn't win with Holy Joe as his running mate.
I've also long believed he picked Palin mostly on impulse.
I suppose I could be persuaded to think that there's some possibility that he refused to do more work vetting his choice due to irritation with the wingnuts (the base) over their narrow range of acceptability, in the sense of, "Oh, hell, none of these choices are any different," but ultimately, I doubt he would have purposely shot himself in the foot, as it turned out he did with his choice, just to spite the GOP.
