Good move

Shoutout to the NBA, and especially Mr. Grant Hill and Mr. Jared Dudley:

(alt. video link)

P.S. Not to be all stereotypical at a time like this, but seriously, IndyCarScene.com? That asshat ("geistC6") is one of your site administrators? Pretty fucking sad.

__________

[Update] Shockingly, that link no longer works. Unless you're a member of IndyCarScene, maybe. Which I guess I no longer am?

The link used to lead to a forum thread in which a bunch of yahoos were whining about being told that what apparently is one of their favorite words is needlessly offensive. I happened across that thread while looking for an online copy of the video above, after seeing the ad on TV, and decided to throw in my two cents. The forum members simply did not care for that, as the comments below also illustrate.

If you don't like it, then don't join.

Simple as that.

The irony is that you seem to be in support of "Stopping Internet Censorship."

So i fail to see you issue with the little PRIVATELY OWNED site.

You consider yourself far more important than you really are. And before you retort with "pot, kettle, black," i know that i have very little importance in the world.

Yes, I had to join up. Your site, unlike mine, does not permit anonymous comments.

Not that I write anything on the Internet that I don't sign my name to, though, so it wasn't any big deal to register.

As to my opinion being unwanted, I'll say that I probably have a better sense of lurkers on any public forum than you do, and I suspect that at least a few readers were happy to see someone speak up in opposition to the rampant homophobia on display in that thread.

As to my being a "tool," I am proud to claim that label: a tool in the ongoing struggle for tolerance, open-mindedness, and civil rights.

Finally, as it happens, I am not gay, but I have considered suicide. One of the things that keeps me from that, though, is the thought that as long as I'm around, maybe, just maybe, in my own little way, I can help make this world a better place.

You're welcome.

It may be time to rethink your thoughts on suicide. Just sayin'.

Funny... you talk about tolerance, but you seem to show no tolerance for ideas or beliefs that differe from yours. Instead of listening, and responding responsibly, you take the typical liberal path and start name calling and being a general douche.

Typical. You talk the talk, but you don't want to walk the walk. You just want everyone else to do it.

End censorship, become more tolerant.

If you had ACTUALLY read the thread, you would have seen that the main bitching was merely about the "nannyfied" state of society at the moment.

That being, the fear that everything has to be PC and that no one should ever have the CHANCE to be offended by ANYTHING.

The thread was NOT about bashing someone's personal choices.

Not ONE person in that thread actually has anything against homosexuals. Learn to read, or just shut the fuck up.

Hey.

Do me a favor.

ARe [sic] you so narcissitic [sic] that you must search out small car forums to harass people?

I wasn't searching out your forum. As I already explained over there, I was looking for an online copy of the PSA I had just seen while watching TV, so I could repost it. Your forum came up first in my search results. I tend to say something if I see something of that nature. Silence can be a killer. See also here.

The irony is that you seem to be in support of "Stopping Internet Censorship."

There is no irony. I am in strong support of stopping censorship, on the Internet and elsewhere. I will defend to the death your right to say whatever you like, online or anywhere else.

That does at all not mean I won't challenge something if I find it offensive. I'm always amazed at how wingnuts confuse disagreement with censorship, but truly, they're not at all the same thing. Get yourself out of your echo chamber once in a while, and you'll see this for yourself.

In any case, my view is that we don't want or need the government jackboot when education of the open-minded and public shaming of the close-minded will do the job better in the long run.

Uh-huh.

Perhaps you should not go to other sites, necroposting on a thread that was intentionally buried, referring to midwesterners as bigots, idiots, etc.

I respect your right to free speech, but I also expect the same. Not a difficult concept to speak to others as you wish to be spoken to.

bjkeefe said...

Paul: You also seem to have some confusion about my views on free speech, but thanks for your more pleasant tone of voice.

I support you Brandon, vote here.

No, really... they don't. They're a very tolerant group of people.

Again, the thread was about how disgusting it is that everyone has to tiptoe around everyone else for fear of offending.

Sorry, some things are offensive, get over it.

Same answer as above. I'll add that the flurry of new visitors over here does not enhance the credibility of your assertion.

Again, the thread was about how disgusting it is that everyone has to tiptoe around everyone else for fear of offending.

Believe it or not, I get as impatient with Political Correctness Run Amok as the next guy. However, there are occasions when words cross a line from maybe being offensive to a few oversensitive types into the much less ambiguous area of hate speech, where the words are intended to wound, especially by making someone feel inferior due to membership in some minority group.

I am sure that there are some words that you would categorize as falling into this latter category. You may not feel that way about "gay" being used as an all-purpose insult, but I'm here to tell you that such usage is extremely threatening to people who already feel more vulnerable than the average person in their surroundings. There are many other ways to insult someone, or just play the dozens, or whatever, that aren't obvious hate speech and are more clever to boot. Why not stretch your brain and vocabulary a bit? (And not just you you.)

Sorry, some things are offensive, get over it.

I could say the same right back to you, concerning my expression of my views, couldn't I?

All this arguing is retarded. Who cares? Keep your helping of kangaroo meat here and car guys keep your helping of surprise butt secks over there.

bjkeefe said...

@El C:

I care. It's an important issue to me. And it will remain one as long as millions of people are made to feel uncomfortable and even afraid to be open about their sexual orientation.

bjkeefe said...

P.S. "Kangaroo meat" explained.

bjkeefe said...

"Pile?"

Please, sir. I am a veritable mountain.

My best friend is gay. Why is it OK for him to use "gay", "faggot", etc but not ok for me?

For the same reason it's okay for Woody Allen to tell Jewish jokes or Richard Pryor to have filled his routines with the word nigger.

Or maybe not, precisely, okay. Probably "less inappropriate" would be more accurate.

And also, context and intent matter.

In the end, though, why not ask your friend this question, instead of asking me?

bjkeefe said...

I'm sorry, I tried to read this crap, but all I got from this is "blah blah blah, I'm a whining liberal faggot who doesn't accept other people's beliefs, blah blah blah."

No need to apologize. That's about all there was to get. You're right: I don't accept the belief that it is good to use a word that many people find highly offensive, and I will continue to challenge that belief.

You don't want to hear me whine, the close tab button is right up there.

"Yes, I had to join up. Your site, unlike mine, does not permit anonymous comments. "

No, you didn't HAVE to. You CHOSE to, because you wanted to shove your opinions and beliefs upon a group of people who couldn't give two fucks less what you think or feel.

"Not that I write anything on the Internet that I don't sign my name to, though, so it wasn't any big deal to register."

Good, now more people will know who is behind the idiotic, ignorant babbling bullshit that rambles off your fingertips.

"As to my opinion being unwanted, I'll say that I probably have a better sense of lurkers on any public forum than you do, and I suspect that at least a few readers were happy to see someone speak up in opposition to the rampant homophobia on display in that thread."

Again, you're wrong. you're the answer to the question nobody asked. The website is a local forum with a small close-knit group of friends, who happen to hate people like you with a passion. You didn't HAVE to do anything that you did, you CHOSE to because you're the type of egocentric douchebag who thinks they are right, and everyone else is wrong, and the world is privileged to hear your opinion. Go back to FOX news, twatwaffle.
