Deep Thought

Yesterday, I saw a dead squirrel in the road, squashed absolutely flat, except for its tail, which was still fully fluffed, upright, and waving in the breeze.

Is this a metaphor for surrender or defiance?

Heh. Or perhaps a metaphor for the eternal debate over thin-crust vs. deep dish!

Dead critters in the road never cease to make me sad, sadly.

I'm with Uncle Eeebz on this one!

I think it is a clear signal that Cano is better than Pedroia. (See Ebeneezer in LGM comments!).

Wow. Talk about things I have no hope of being objective about.

Petey's good. Cano rules.

;)

As to your feeling about Cano's defense, Eb, it really is the case, to amplify what someone said over on LGM, that he's so smooth that nothing he can reach looks like a hard play. However, I'll concede the possibility that there's some sort of sabermetric argument to be made that lets Petey come out on top. He's good, no question about it.

Yeah, I look at them basically as a wash. I see Pedroia make alot of highlight reel plays but that could be partly because A.) I have a bigger sample size of Sox games and B.) the diminutive size may make Pedroia's efforts more incredible than they are, and Cano's smoothness may do the opposite (as you posit.) I have always been a sucker for smoothness too, in sports. While I may root for Nadal or Ginobli one day, I usually am more long-term appreciative of Federer or Jordan. Sometimes grace does trump stats. That much I admit.

With Cano you get more power (partially because of his large frame), whereas with Pedroia you get an unusual amount of power (for his size), and also a great hitter who can spray the field and hit for contact. I'm not sure how Cano compares in that regard. Is he more of a pure pull hitter? Anyways, again if I'm a manager, I'm very happy to have either one on my squad.

Cano has line-to-line power, as the newish saying has it. He pulls a lot, sure, especially in Yankee Stadium, but he's got very good power to the left-center gap, too.

Ohio: highest percentage of dead things on the road on the recent road trip. Also they were lumpier.

You know what that says to me? Clearly, the socialist unions still have WAY too much power. If the free market were allowed to do its magic, people wouldn't be able to live high on the government hog. Instead, they'd be out there scooping up their dinners off the asphalt the way Republican Jesus intended.

Were it not for the oppressive regulatory agents of the Obamavillians, the market surely would create a car that safely avoids ever hitting a small animal! And ponies too.

If it weren't for Obamanomics having removed all incentive and limited all freedom of movement, the squirrel never would have been hit in the first place!!!1!
