Hard to believe it's taken me this long to figure out why I have so much trouble remembering that hoi polloi doesn't mean "upper crust," but at long last, there it is.
Sorry to bother you with this, but the penny finally dropping is always a good feeling.

"hoi polloi" does not impress the underclasses, as they don't even know you're disdaining them: irony directed at the witless is like sex without a partner.
Nor does it impress the upper classes who merely stand and wait to unmasking those presumers who would pleonastically prefix an extra "the" to the sufficently articulate "hoi", and then dare to treat the plural whole with singular disdain.
Hypocrisy is a charge best served cold to such posers.
