The answer turned out to be surprisingly hard to find using the Google, so I thought I'd add a little link juice and, of course, a note of thanks to Scott Ogrin of ScottiesTech.info.
It makes the mind reel that there is something fundamental that MS PAINT can do that none of my other image processing programs can.

Ah! Utility!
Hi bjkeefe, have you got the same trick with osx? thanks
Sorry, Henry, but I don't know much about Macs.
However, there appear to be some likely-looking possibilities near the top of this search, such as Adobe Reader (if you can convert the image to a PDF) and Posterazor.
I declare you awesome for sharing this - thank you! I am amazed that only MS Paint has the ability to print in a long format!
Wow, thank you, this was really helpful.
You're both welcome.
And yes, Irene, it is amazing, isn't it? Seems like a common enough task that you'd think any decent image viewer would do it.
Thanks, you sir, rock!
Cool! I never use Paint until today when I found this post. Works perfectly - thanks for mentioning it.
Thanks
You're welcome, A, Z, and M.
Thanks a lot. This is very helpful and the most simple.
Very good! thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you- been looking everywhere for this! Wouldn't have guessed Old MS Paint would be the answer.
You're welcome, Anon. And yes, it's an amazing thing that MS Paint, of all programs, gets this done, isn't it?
Perfect!!! Indeed there's not much info about this to find.
Even I though I don't work much to none with msPaint but no difficult progr, such an simple step never knew.
So, thanks for making me wiser :D
You're welcome, Aurora! Glad I could help. Thanks for letting me know.
I can not seem to do this with the paint program in Windows 10! Is it a function of what printer you have?
never mind, it does work on Windows 10, since I was not familar with the tree menu drop down of print, I was missing page setup, when I found that it was the same and what a great feature!
Glad to hear it still works on Win 10. (I am still on Win 7, and so far, I'm resisting MS's exhortations to upgrade.)
