Anti-Microsoft Snark of the Day: 2007-04-19

The only possible explanation is that someone on the Outlook team is getting paid a bonus for convincing people to switch to Gmail.
-- Joel Spolsky

The real question, though, is why an otherwise brilliant guy like Joel Spolsky is using Outlook in the first place.

Outlook is definitely the path of least resistance if you are saddled with a Microsoft Exchange mail server. The real question then is why is Spolsky (probably) using Exchange? The answer to that may have something to do with being ex-Microsoft...

You're right about Spolsky being an ex-Microsoftie. He's also up front about not hating their products in general.

I do continue to wonder about his use of Outlook, and if your guess about MS Exchange is correct, I am doubly puzzled. Maybe it has to do with his customer base being heavily weighted to MS products, and so he feels that it's better that he eat the dog food, too.

Microsoft products tend to compliment each other and Exchange server has features that cannot be found elsewhere. It's prevalence in the corporate world is not due to some conspiracy.

And yes I know about Zimbra and no it doesn't have the same functionality as exchange.

Microsoft spends billions on R&D so it shouldn't be a surprise that some of their products are actually chosen because of their technical merit(gasp).
