Line of the Day: 2008-05-13

TBogg, commenting on the latest antics of Holy Joe Lieberman and a certain someone who has yet to do anything about it:

Reid obviously understands the words "Senate" and "Majority".

"Leader"...not so much.

What exactly is Reid supposed to do about Lieberman? Because of Lieberman's current agreement to caucus with the Democrats, every single Senate committee is chaired (and controlled) by Democrats.

Lieberman's a pain in the ass, for sure, but there are only 49 Democrats in the US Senate. We get a 50th vote from the socialist Bernie Sanders.

Republicans also control 49 seats, and they get Cheney's vote, putting them at 50.

That's a 50-50 tie, with Lieberman's 101st vote making all the difference in the world.

Personally, I hope that the Democrats can substantially increase their numbers in November and finally cut Lieberman loose. Until then, I think we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot by giving Republicans control of the Senate.

With Cheney's tie-breaking vote, Republicans

You know, I appreciate the value of emotion as much as the next guy, but some of the comments over at that site are just ridiculous.

For example, the guy who says, "The Dems need to man up and strip the execrable little piece of shit Lieberman of every vestige of authority."

This is just stupid. If the Democrats forced Lieberman's hand, they wouldn't have any power to strip Lieberman of authority! How can this person be aware of the damage Lieberman is doing but not aware that control of the Senate is precariously balanced on Lieberman's whim?

As much as I dislike Lieberman, we should be grateful he at least has agreed to give Democrats control of the Senate. We obviously don't like being in debt to someone who is constantly jabbing us in the eye, but what Lieberman giveth, Lieberman can take away — at any time.

You make a good case, Twin, and I don't really have any specifics to offer in return. It's just that it seems to me that someone with the political skills to get to the position of Senate Majority Leader would have some tools at his disposal that could be brought to bear on Lieberman.

There's another point that occurs to me: since it's nearly impossible to get anything of significance passed in the Senate without 60 votes, I wonder how much damage there really would be if Lieberman were to go over to the Republican side officially.
