Ezra's Bearings Seem Okay

I think it's a pretty dumb rationale, actually, and Ezra sort of admits it when he says basically "if they're going to play dirty then I won't feel bad about doing the same."

Unless you are making a serious accusation that McCain is so old that he actually has some form of senile dimensia which would clearly preclude him from the presidency, then as one of commenters on that thread put it, how is making fun of someone's age any different than making fun of any other element of a person's identity? Isn't this only a more socially acceptable thing to make fun of than a person's gender or religion or race?

Do you think a random 60 year old person you met on the street would be insulted if you told them they were older than Alaska?

I think you missed Ezra's larger point. Either that, or I read it differently than you did. As I saw it, the issue is not how old McCain is. It's how old he thinks.
