Following up from the last post, I strongly recommend Frank Rich's column.

Can you defend your favorite "brilliant" hack on her lie about Bill Maher's being Independent?

'The Rachel Maddow Show' for Tuesday, September 16 2008

MADDOW: Still ahead, I'll talk with Bill Maher about Governor Sarah Palin. He's an independent. I wonder if she's won him over to the Republican side.

Roundtable discussion of ABC's "This Week" May 05 2010
MAHER: I think a lot of people on the Left have with the country and have for many years is that there's no one that really represents our point of view.

I should ignore this, since it's so off-topic, and the chances of persuading you to give your homophobia a rest are slim and fat, and slim is out of town. However . . .

Not that she needs it, but I will be happy to "defend" Maddow for saying Maher is an independent. If that's what he says he is, then he is. He may mean nothing more than "I dislike both major parties, so I am not registered with either." Identifying himself as of Teh Left does not equate in everyone's mind with being a Democrat -- only people off the cliff on the Right don't get this. (Similarly for me, BTW -- I haven't been a registered Democrat since last century.)

It's similar to what drives your teabagging friends, except on the opposite side and for all the wrong reasons: they don't think the GOP is wingnutty enough or racist enough or whatever, so they, too, call themselves "independents."

Now, run along and get yourself a life. Your obsession with Rachel Maddow is getting embarrassing.

Also, you should probably try to wean yourself away from Newsbusters. I don't know what's worse -- their perpetual search for excuses to play the victim or their lies, but in any case, that is probably the most pathetic site on the Web. Sarah Palin's Facebook page included.

Independent is used by media to portray middle of road people ("the center") who are not Republicans or Democrats and could vote either way.

Maddow was implying that there was a chance that Maher would vote Republican if they ran someone moderate enough.

First, are you telling me you let the media tell you how to think? If so, why are you wasting your time reading Noel Sheppard and the rest of those clowns?

Second, this is not the only use of "independent." More typically, the voter you describe is called a "moderate" or "centrist," since "independent" may have different meanings to different people, as I illustrated with my comment above.

Maddow was implying that there was a chance that Maher would vote Republican if they ran someone moderate enough.

First, maybe he would have. I know I've voted for Republicans before. Just because the GOP is currently in the grips of the dumbest, most bigoted people in America doesn't mean they always have been.

Second, you really ought to get over your obsession with Maddow. And if you can't, you ought to find someplace else to vent it -- you're wasting your time here. I think Rachel is smart and does good summaries of stories I already know about, but I don't get my information from the teevee.
