Obama for Grownups

Finally, somebody in the MSM breaks out of the narrative and doesn't write a hand-wringing piece about Obama's perceived* "move to the center."

Nice column, Gail Collins.

* If you missed it, more on the perception here.

Interesting point of view, but did he really have to chose to compromise on the FISA law? I can understand the gun control compromise and the faith based secular schools, but the Bill of Rights is one of those fundamental issues that's harder to swallow. There's the danger of going Republican lite again which turned us independents against Kerry.

Yeah, I didn't love that one, to the extent that I understood his thinking, anyway. And I do have some sympathy for the left's urge to hold Obama's feet to the fire, to prevent him from becoming a gooey centrist who takes his base for granted.

Still, the amount of griping from my peeps on the far left is getting out of hand. There's a real sense of immaturity in the amount of vitriol, and in the attempts to paint every last thing as a complete flip-flop or sell-out. You can't govern if you don't win, and you can't govern successfully if you only appeal to a small part of the electorate.

Worse, the "Obama pivot" has become THE media narrative. Not only is it boring, not only does it feel like a repeat of the damage done to Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004, it's filling up too much space that should be devoted to taking a similar critical look at John McCain.
