Mr. Bispo pointed to a McClatchy article that told me something I did not know: George W. Bush will be the first president not to have lifetime Secret Service protection. It's nothing personal:
Congress changed the law in the 1990s so that any president elected after Jan. 1, 1997, and his or her spouse will receive the federal protection for only 10 years.
I can't argue with either of Mr. B's observations: it seems a strange place to try to save a few bucks in the Federal budget, given the potential PR nightmare, but on the other hand, it's not as though Bush won't be able to afford his own protection detail.
The McClatchy article goes on to talk about other aspects of Bush's post-presidential life. Still, given the lede, I found the last line a little unfortunate:
Bush will receive a state funeral upon his death, with full military honors for the former commander in chief.
