I had this exact experience today with one of my best friends -- who now lives a couple states away. He saw the movie over the weekend, and railed about it today, saying that Gene Roddenberry would be spinning in his grave (if he had one), and that the new movie "wasn't really like a Trek film; it was like any other action/adventure that just happened to have Star Trek characters in it."
But, he assured me, it was really good and he enjoyed watching it. He rated it "in the 80-89 range" on a scale of 1-100.
When I asked him why Roddenberry would be spinning in his grave, he said "because he was all about social and political statements, which this movie had none of."
