The New Monkey's Uncle

Attaturk points to a fascinating article in New Scientist (and don't miss the slide show) that describes the latest thinking in how single-cell creatures became multi-cellular organisms. Also discussed: the leading candidates for the mother father ancestor of all animals since.

You know how the fundies get panicked at the thought that "your grandfather was a monkey?" It's about to get a whole lot worse: it's looking increasingly likely that the combined Adam and Eve, as it were, is a sponge.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT SPONGES.

Kidding aside, the article and slide show are worth a look.

It's worse than that - your grandmother wore amoeba boots.
