Remember the Maine!

From the HuffPo:

Maine Governor John Baldacci signed Wednesday into law a bill legalizing gay marriage in the state. The move makes Maine the fifth state to allow gay marriage.

From the press release at the same link:

"In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions," Governor Baldacci said. "I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

I salute your open-mindedness and willingness to learn, Governor. And shoutouts, too, to the Maine legislature and everyone who worked to make this happen.

[Added] In case you're curious: Before the bill came to the governor, it passed the Maine Senate by a vote of 21-13 and it passed the House, 89-57, according to Maine's Times Record (via).

It's interesting to compare the legislative concerns of Maine and Oklahoma.

Hi Brendan,

I don't support gay marriage, but I do applaud the pioneering spirit of these small pockets in our country, however I may disagree with what they're doing.

Independent of our views we should observe the changing face of the country and move forward together.
