More Embarrassed Than Proud, I Have To Say ...

The above is a partial screen capture from the output of a Javascript app that uses your browser history to guess your gender.

Was it all the gay porn, do you think?

Try it for yourself. (If you get a "script busy" pop-up, just click "Continue." The script will finish a few seconds after that.)

Unfortunately (well, probably very fortunately, actually!) I clear my browser history almost everyday, so the script didn't have much to go on: 38% female--apparently more women than men use Hotmail; 62% male--Fark it all, a dead giveaway!

I used to worry about clearing my browser history, but I finally decided I was already being tracked in so many other ways that it wasn't worth giving up the convenience of having it available. If there's one thing that drives me crazy, it's thinking, "Now, I just saw something about that the other day. Dammit, what site was that again?"

Even Google can't beat CTRL-h sometimes.

And really, I can't think of any place that I visit that I'd be embarrassed to admit.

Well, maybe one site ...

Mine is too close for comfort...

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 48%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 52%

I guess I need to start visiting ESPN.com and back off from visiting lifetimetv.com

Depending on how long your browser history is, you might claim this result with pride, as an indication that you're free from chauvinism.

That's what I meant about being embarrassed about my own results -- I do know that I read a lot of political blogs (which are male-dominated) and science blogs (ditto), and I've always been aware of how few women I read regularly on any topic, but I didn't think I was this skewed.

I got 15% female. So I have a feminine side. That's based on a 21 day browsing history.

Congratulations for being less of a sexist pig than I am, John. What do you think tipped your score? Did you see any sites listed on the test page that have primarily women visiting that you visit regularly? Or a lot of neutral ones?

I didn't notice. I just assumed it was a stray gay gene. No?
