I mentioned at the end of an earlier post that John McCain had blown off Letterman, using the old gotta-rush-back-to-DC-and-put-country-first excuse, only to be busted while Dave was still taping his show.
A smart man once advised against picking a fight with anyone who buys ink by the barrel. I'd say this is the digital illustration of why.

It can't be a close race any more, surely... ?
It's been going Obama's was the past week or so, moving slowly but steadily from him being down by about two to up by about three, as of today. But the trend is hopeful, and the backfire of this latest McCain stunt, I would think, should only help.
However, I think it will be a close race no matter how how much McCain continues to crash and burn. There are just too many ill-informed people in this country, too many committed Democrat-haters, and too many racists.

Sad, but cogent analysis and unquestionably true. People are just locked into their voting preferences and it takes a political earthquake to move 15% of the population. A McCain stunt that backfires massively might move the polls 1%-2% in Obama's favor. There just aren't that many voters up for grabs. It's as Yglesias said months ago in response to Nutjob Concern Trolling about "how come Obama isn't ahead by 15 points!"
How come? Because there are lots and lots of conservatives, and they vote Republican. No matter what. Practically everyone I work with is in this camp. They made their minds up 20 years ago how they were going to vote in this election. One woman I work with has been a wingnut since her first vote in 1966, and she knew then, 42 years ago, how she would vote in 2008.
The reason it's good McCain is making mistakes is not because it means we'll win by a landslide, but because it means we might win by 1% in Ohio or a half a percent in Florida. (As you know.)
All true, but when the masses start laughing at (not with, mind you, but *at*) political leaders, that's when those leaders need to start polishing their resumes.
McCain is now being laughed at by e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e. Today's nonsense parade was just inexplicable-and it's elicited widespread derision. That sound you hear is a toilet flushing...
The question is, how many of his apologists will we be able to take down with the same flush?
Wow. THat is a lesson to never get on Letterman's bad side because he will mock you relentlessly and probably not for just one show.
