Berkeley Breathed says November 2 will be the last time we see Opus. He does a short interview with Salon explaining (sort of) why. BB is both funny and obtuse in the interview.
If you take him at face value, he sounds discouraged both by the tone of today's discourse and the nervous nelliness of today's newspaper editors. I get the sense, as well, that he's just burnt out on drawing the same comic strip. Or perhaps it's more a sense that he wants to say some things that he doesn't want the current characters to be saying. I hope it's the latter and he starts up something else, maybe more straightforward political cartooning.

Berk keeps trying to put Opus behind him. This is what the third strip he's put to bed? Even if the puffin, err, "buoyant waterfowl" is sent to his "final" resting place, this time, who knows how long Breathed will be able to hold out before he resurrects him?
