This'll come as a shock to some of you, but I did not care to watch John McCain's speech last night. Read, fell asleep early, like that.
Hit nytimes.com this morning to see if the half the nation had suffered alcoholic blackouts from doing a shot every time McCain said "My friends." Saw a different headline (click for larger):
Whoa. Seizing? Did he really rise above? Deliver a barn-burner? Show himself to be the new the old the new the old something different from the guy who has varied only between soporific and cranky these past few years?
Or does Bad Santa's question apply?
As we have noted before, sometimes it pays to read past the headline.
Much of the address, though delivered at one of the most prominent moments of a presidential campaign, was little different from the stump speech he has been delivering across the country. And it was often offered in a monotone as he stood before a solid-color backdrop that flicked from green to blue. The reaction was far more subdued than it was the night before for his running mate, Ms. Palin. There were stretches in which he drew only a smattering of applause.
Yup. That's what I thought.
[Added] Andrew Sullivan gathers up a bunch of reactions from top conservative pundits and bloggers. Apart from the thoroughly unsurprising bit from perenially wacked-out cheerleader Hugh Hewitts, the verdict was unanimous, even from the rightwingers: snoozefest.
