Hi Brendan,

I know how bored you are, so I decided to say "Hi". I know how deeply you love that.

I enjoyed your "House of Worship" cartoons. Some are really hilarious. And they are certainly quite appropriate for the times.

I have a couple of comments about this post (Bonding). I liked Obama's photograph. He is as handsome as usual. I looked at "bartcop". I'm sure you will understand my critique since you are such a perfectionist in other areas. First, the site is too "flashy". Nothing wrong with that, except that I don't trust sites like that. Maybe it's bias, plain prejudice, but it just doesn't inspire credibility. Second there are so many colors all over the place that there's no balance, no harmony, so to speak. Since I like visual arts, it did turn me off. And lastly, I like Christmas trees and Xmas decorations. It's one of those traditions that I fully enjoy. I love to put together the little village with buildings, people, trees and all the other stuff. It's fun! My kids love it too. But it looks like bartcop had issues with Xmas trees. Too bad. I'm sure he/she doesn't have to be anywhere near my house and feel offended by the decorations that will start to appear soon.

Just a comment, my friend.

Glad you liked the previous post's links. Thanks for letting me know.

I will agree without hesitation that bartcop's site design gets zero points for elegance. I wasn't so much recommending it as just acknowledging the source of the picture -- blogger courtesy and ethics and all that.

I do have to say that when I see a site like that these days, especially when the content is good (which I thought it was), I half suspect the owner of having a love of irony, or a fetish for retro, or an irritation with the caricature of today's Very Serious Web Designers.

Ultimately, if I don't find the site distracting when I'm reading, I call that 95% good. But in the abstract, yes, I agree that there's little aesthetic appeal.

I don't know what your Christmas decorations reference means. Were you talking about the Letterman quote about the White House Christmas tree?

No. Bartcop's site makes a reference to Xmas trees. That's all.

I agree with you that the content of the site, if you like it, is most important. I think for me it has to do more with a site that is visually "too busy". Some people, like me, don't do well with clutter. It's a cognitive style or limitation. It's too overwhelming. With effort I can adjust, but it would be much easier if the site was more symmetric and organized. But, I'm sure other people truly enjoy that style, and that's the joy of diversity.

The only occurrence of the word tree on that whole page is the Letterman quote:

"The Capitol Hill Christmas tree arrived. And they've got to decorate it so a $10 billion contract went to Halliburton."

which is a joke that seems to me to have nothing to do with a view of Christmas trees. So I'm still mystified.

Brendan,

Enjoy your mystified state.

I read Christmas tree and I interpreted Christmas tree. If there was any other meaning to it, I just missed it and proud of it!
